Cidade de São Paulo

According to The economist article, Where is the most expensive place to own a car?, São Paulo/Brazil hit No. 2 globally with 130,000 U$ annually, right behind Shanghai/China 140,000 U$ .

The factors that the study relied on:

  • Petrol prices;
  • Insurance;
  • Road tax;
  • and servicing.

Taking into account the fact numbers from somebody who lives in São Paulo. The quality of roads are horrible with holes that can swallow a car almost in every neighborhood. The fuel is $1,4/liter where the traffic raise the consumption into average of 4 km/l.  adding to car property tax and the insurance. The average parking price for an hour is $10.

The transportation cost, among other reasons, have been given for Brazil’s economic slowdown. However, and according to FT

if Brazil really wants to hold onto its position as a leading emerging market, it must address structural problems, starting with infrastructure and education.
